While most individuals undergo orthodontic treatment in their early or late teens, some decide to undergo treatment as an adult. If you are an adult who is thinking about finally having that gorgeous smile you’ve always wanted, you still can! We treat both adults and children at Oak Hill Orthodontics.
However, a few possible disadvantages come along with waiting until you’re an adult to have your treatment. In some adult patients, the teeth may take longer to move compared to moving teeth in children, which can prolong treatment time. Another disadvantage of treating adult patients is that jaw growth is already complete. If growth is complete and a discrepancy between the top and bottom jaw is present, the options for treatment are limited. The teeth can be straightened and moved to camouflage the jaw discrepancy, however esthetics can be compromised. Individuals with a severe jaw discrepancy may require orthognathic surgery to achieve ideal esthetics and function.
Correction of orthodontic problems in adults can:
- help prevent or improve periodontal problems
- help prevent or reduce further bone loss around teeth
- improve the ability to restore missing teeth
- improve aesthetics for a better smile and facial appearance
- improve function of teeth
- improve self-confidence and self-esteem
- improve oral health
In the majority of adult orthodontic treatment, final treatment decisions are made in consultation with your family dentist and other specialists, if necessary.
If you suffer from any of the following conditions, schedule a complimentary consultation to see what options are available to straighten your teeth.
